You sent it, but did they read it?
Using DidTheyReadIt is remarkably easy. All it takes is 2 simple steps. DidTheyReadIt is 100% compatible with Windows and Mac, and all different e-mail clients. Read below for setup instructions, or click here for frequently asked questions.
1. Sign up for an account which you can do by clicking here.
2. Start sending tracked messages. Please click one of the following that best describes your e-mail program and how you send e-mails:
Webmail, Yahoo, AOL, Macintosh, and Others |
Once you have signed up for a DidTheyReadIt account, all you need to do is add ".didtheyreadit.net" to the end of the recipient's e-mail address. For example, if you were sending an e-mail to ellen@aol.com you'd just send it to ellen@aol.com.didtheyreadit.net instead*, and your e-mail will be tracked; ellen@aol.com would not see that you added .didtheyreadit.net to her e-mail address.
Example:
Becomes...
* If you are sending an e-mail to multiple recipients, you need to add ".didtheyreadit.net" to each address.

Microsoft Outlook Users |
If you use Microsoft Outlook for sending your e-mail, the easiest way to track your mail is to download and install our plugin. To do so, first quit Microsoft Outlook, then click the link below, and immediately click the Open or Run button to install.
All Outlook users on Windows Vista or XP: Click Here: didtheyreadit2k7.exe,
or - try our New! Beta version: 2008 Beta: DTRISetup2008.exe
After installing the plugin, open Microsoft Outlook. You will see a message asking you to configure DidTheyReadIt. To configure, you just need to enter your e-mail address (the same one you used to setup DidTheyReadIt) and your password (the password you chose for DidTheyReadIt). After that, whenever you create a new message or reply to an existing message, you will see a DidTheyReadIt button, shown below.
If the button shows "DidTheyReadIt Message Tracking On" then DidTheyReadIt will track the message. To turn message tracking off, simply click this button again.
If you are at a different computer and you need to track an e-mail, or if you are using a web browser like Internet Explorer, or a wireless device to check your e-mail account and not your home/work computer where you have the DidTheyReadIt Outlook plugin installed, just follow the instructions above for webmail.

Windows 2000 and XP+ Users Only (Outlook, Outlook Express, Eudora, etc.) |
If you use Windows 2000 or XP and have a standard mail account (and do not use AOL, Microsoft Exchange, or webmail such as Hotmail or Yahoo) download and install the DidTheyReadIt Background Tracker. Otherwise click here for instructions on using DidTheyReadIt with other e-mail setups. If you use Microsoft Outlook then you should use the Outlook plugin, described above.
Click here to download the Background Tracker.
Once the application is installed and you have re-booted your machine, you will be asked to login.
After logging in, look in your system tray (the area on the bottom right-hand corner of your screen where the clock is). If you see the green circle as in the example below, you are ready to go.
Now every time that you send an e-mail through an e-mail application (e.g. Outlook Express, Eudora, Thunderbird), your e-mail will automatically be tracked.
If you are at a friend's house or a library and you need to track an e-mail, but you are using a web browser like Internet Explorer or AOL to check your e-mail account and not your home computer where you have the DidTheyReadIt background tracker installed, just click here and follow the instructions for webmail.

How does DidTheyReadIt differ from the Read Receipts I use in Outlook?
DidTheyReadIt is much more powerful from standard "return receipts." It differs from standard read-receipts because it works regardless of the e-mail program being used by the recipient. Standard read-receipts don't work if someone views your e-mail in web-based e-mail programs like Hotmail or Yahoo!, and some desktop e-mail programs can't process them either. Even when an e-mail program does support them, a lot of times they are ignored by the recipient. Also, the recipient knows that your e-mail is being tracked. DidTheyReadIt works automatically, without alerting the recipient that the e-mail is being tracked.
What happens after you send a message?
When the recipient gets the e-mail, it looks the same as any other e-mail that you send them. The instant they read the message, you will get an e-mail telling you that your message was read. It will contain the following information:
- When the message was read.
- Where (geographically---approximately) the message was read.
When they have finished reading the message, you will receive a more detailed report, which will also indicate how long they read the message for.
Each time the message is re-opened, even by a different person, you will be alerted. This means that if the recipient forwards your message, you will know. (You'll even know where the recipient is located, geographically).

Do I have to do anything different to track my e-mails?
By using the background tracker with a regular e-mail account (not AOL, Hotmail, or Yahoo), DidTheyReadIt allows you to track your messages without changing anything about the way you send e-mail. If you are using a web browser to read your e-mail, or if you use AOL, Yahoo, Hotmail, etc., then just add ".didtheyreadit.net" to the end of the recipient's e-mail address. For example, if you were sending an e-mail to ellen@aol.com you'd just send it to ellen@aol.com.didtheyreadit.net instead.

Does DidTheyReadIt work if my e-mail has an attachment?
Yes. DidTheyReadIt will be able to tell you when a message with an attachment is opened, but it won't tell you when the attached file is viewed.

Does DidTheyReadIt always work? DidTheyReadIt will determine if your message has been read (as well as how long and where) the vast majority of the time, upwards of 98% in extensive testing. Will it always work? No. Think of it like caller ID. Caller ID works most of the time and will show you who is calling you, but every now and then you get a "Private Call" or "Unavailable" number. We encourage you to sign up for a free account to test DidTheyReadIt. There is absolutely no obligation to purchase and we believe that you will find it an invaluable service that is effective. For more information, see our knowledgebase at http://www.didtheyreadit.net/index.php/html/support which has more information. Top
Can I run DidTheyReadIt on two computers using the same DidTheyReadIt account?

Can I use the same DidTheyReadIt account on two different email accounts?

Does DidTheyReadIt work with my Hotmail, Yahoo! or AOL e-mail accounts?
Yes. If you compose e-mails with these accounts using a web browser, just add ".didtheyreadit.net" to the end of the recipient's e-mail address. For example, if you were sending an e-mail to ellen@aol.com you'd just send it to ellen@aol.com.didtheyreadit.net instead.
Top
Can I use DidTheyReadIt on my computer at work?
